Native grape varieties of Moldova

Moldovan wine is more than international varieties — these grapes define the country’s identity in the glass.

Fetească Neagră

Moldova’s premier red grape, thought to be over 2 000 years old, originating in the Prut River valley. Vigorous with mid-to-late ripening, thick-skinned berries resistant to drought and cold (down to −22 °C). Full-bodied wines with ripe plums, blackberry, dried forest fruits and black cherry. Often compared to Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Shines in blends with Rară Neagră or Saperavi.

Rară Neagră

Also known as Babească Neagră in Romania, originating in the historic Greater Moldova region. Light-bodied with velvety tannins and high natural acidity — often compared to Pinot Noir for structure and finesse. Key player in iconic blends like Negru de Purcari; highlights terroir differences beautifully.

Fetească Albă

Aromatic white: white flowers, peach. Winemaking matters — seek serious producers for balance.

Fetească Regală

Versatile “king” white: riper, crowd-friendly profile; works dry to off-dry styles.

Viorica

Created in 1969 by crossing Seibel 13-666 (French hybrid) with Aleatico (Italian) — both parents are red, yet Viorica is white. Aromas of acacia, jasmine, linden, citrus zest, lychee and candied apricot. ~95 ha planted in Moldova. Great aperitif or with lightly spiced cuisine.

FAQ

Why do native varieties matter for Moldova?

They are the country’s signature abroad — Fetească Neagră is over 2 000 years old, and Fautor Negre (a Fetească Neagră + Rară Neagră blend) was named best red wine in the world at the 2022 Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. Native grapes drive wine tourism and preserve the region’s viticultural heritage.
